Office clients or custom applications can use the Published Links Web Service (publishedlinks.asmx) to get a list of sites to which a user belongs. You can, for example, send an email to all people who are a member of a particular SharePoint site or you could synchronize someones documents with another repository.
Office clients can use this via the "File Dialog box", if you click Save as, you will see MySharePoints.
